Several years ago, I was looking for something to do with our old books that were sitting around and collecting dust when I came across an article promoting a Little Free Library. A Little Free Library is a small enclosed box placed in a public space and filled with books for anyone to borrow. The motto of the Little Free Library is “take a book, leave a book, always free.” It’s more than just a book exchange – it’s also about building community, inspiring readers and sparking creativity. As a family who loves reading, I knew that this was something that I would like for our family to do together!

This past summer, we began our Little Free Library project. We started by calling the City of Ft Mitchell and speaking with the Public Works Director, Matt Stegman, to make sure that this was something that the city would allow us to place in our front yard. The idea was met with overwhelming acceptance and excitement by the City of Ft. Mitchell. Mr. Stegman came to our house to help us determine where we would place the Library in accordance to the public access easement lines. We also had to have 811 (Call Before You Dig) come to the house to mark all of the utilities before we could dig the hole for the post.

We needed something to use for the Library, we were looking for something that we could recycle or repurpose, something that would be unique for our Library. While searching the internet for ideas on what to use for the Library, I came across an old solid wood dollhouse. While the dollhouse was perfect for the project, it would require a lot of work, but the front of it looked just like our house! We cut out walls from inside of the house to accommodate books on both levels, sanded it down, waterproofed it, primed and painted it. The back of the house was open and needed to be enclosed so we took the house to our friend Ken Roenker. Ken came up with a plan to add a frame to the back of the house and to install custom made doors with plexiglass.  He also made the post that we would cement into the front yard that would support the Library.

Our Little Free Library #43039 was opened in September! We registered the Library on the Little Free Library website and obtained a Charter number for it. The Charter number allows the Steward to add the Library to the World Map of Little Free Libraries. There are over 50,000 Little Free Libraries in the world! We were the first Library in Ft. Mitchell and the only one registered in zip code 41011! It was a fun summer working on the Library and it turned out great. We’re always excited when we have visitors at the Library, it’s nice to see others enjoying it too. We check the Library daily and rotate the books weekly. We’ve included a guest book and always have some fun bookmarks to take along with your new book!
