Local Museum to Host Historic Walking Tour During Regional History Weekend

The Fort Thomas Military and Community History Museum is proud to participate in Regional History Weekend, a collaborative celebration of Northern Kentucky’s rich heritage, taking place May 16–18 in partnership with several area museums and historical societies.

As part of the weekend’s festivities, the Fort Thomas Museum will host a guided walking tour on Sunday, May 18 at 10:30 am, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the legacy of Fort Thomas through its original architecture and vibrant past.

The relaxed tour will begin at the historic Mess Hall (801 Cochran Avenue) and will highlight many of the original buildings from the fort’s early days, as well as structures from the first business district that grew alongside the military post. Participants will learn about notable residents, restored homes, and may even get a rare glimpse inside the iconic stone water tower.

“Walking along South Fort Thomas Avenue, guests will hear stories of the early businesses that once lined the street and the complex relationships between military leadership and local entrepreneurs. The tour will also explore the history behind the stone boundary walls separating the fort from the town—including why some sections were built with “a little extra edge” to ensure they stay on one side of the wall.” –Deanna Beineke, Fort Thomas Museum Director.

The tour will conclude around noon at the Museum, where guests are invited to view some of the museum’s latest acquisitions. Admission is free, though donations are welcome and appreciated.
