In early June, Bill Brenner of Cambridgeshire, UK went on a walking tour of the Lake and Peak Districts in England.

Located in Cumbria in northwest England, the Lake District is both a region and a national park. Popular with vacationers and walkers, it’s known for glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fell mountains and literary associations.

The famous children’s author Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) spent many childhood holidays in the Lake District and these stays influenced her work. With the money she earned from her books, she purchased Hill Top Farm and other farms in the Lake District, leaving her property to the National Trust when she passed.

Romantic poets of the late eighteenth century and nineteenth century were also influenced by the beauty of the region, including William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge and Thomas de Quincey.

Towns such as Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick on the scenic Derwentwater offer accommodation, dining and shopping options for travelers.

The Peak District is in central-northern England at the southern end of the Pennines. Mostly in Derbyshire, it extends into Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.  Most of the area lies within the Peak District National Park, designated in 1951 to protect the stunning landscapes.

Within the parklands, Bill walked the Great Ridge which separates the vales of Edale and Castleton, this is said to be one of the best ridge walks in the U.K.  In Tegg’s Nose Country Park (Macclesfield), he discovered pastoral views for miles and curious farm animals.

The park has 1,600 miles of public right of ways (footpaths, bridleways and tracks) including 64 miles available to those with accessibility requirements and attracts 13 million visitors a year. However, looking at Bill’s photos, it feels like it’s just him and nature as he captures the beauty of the region.
