Flower Field of Dreams: Homegrown on Haubner Hill

Homegrown on Haubner Hill is the brainchild of Angie King. Located in California, Kentucky, this flower farm has been bringing smiles to hundreds who visit for U-Pick flowers, photography sessions, workshops and more. You may have met King at Flea-in-the Fort or at other area markets.

I visited Homegrown on Haubner Hill during a private U-Pick event with a group of friends and was instantly charmed. Lacking two green thumbs myself, I was delighted to pick from a great selection of flowers, including my favorite (Zinnia) and create a bouquet to take home. I was equally delighted to meet King and learn about her story.

Coming from a family of gardeners who grow and preserve much of their own produce on their multigenerational farm, they expanded their crops to include fresh cut flowers in recent years.  I learned that their practices were sustainable and that they incorporate a regenerative mindset-rebuilding the soil and working with nature to maximize its health and ecosystem.

Asking King more about her business, she shared, “Homegrown on Haubner Hill, in its 3rd season, is a small-scale flower farm located in California, KY and officially began in 2024. While the flower farm itself is new, the land has been part of our family’s story for six generations. It was initially created for on-farm events but has expanded to other off farm events.”

Bringing Joy to Herself and Others

“Flowers have always brought me joy, but I wanted them to become something more than just something beautiful to grow.” King continues, “I envisioned a place where people could step away from their busy lives, spend time outdoors, and make memories with family and friends. Whether someone is cutting flowers, attending a workshop or farm event, or simply walking through the field, I hope they leave feeling a little more happy.”

“The decision to start Homegrown on Haubner Hill was also a very personal one. After experiencing some health challenges, I realized it was time to make a change. I chose to leave my corporate career and pursue flower farming full-time—a decision that allowed me to prioritize my health while building something I truly love. It wasn’t an easy leap, but it has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made” shared King.

“Starting the flower farm has given me the opportunity to preserve and celebrate our family’s farming heritage in a new way. I have the privilege of caring for the land while creating a place where others can slow down, reconnect with nature, and make memories of their own. Watching visitors experience the flowers, the countryside, and the simple joy of being outdoors reminds me every day why I started this journey.”  King continues, “Homegrown on Haubner Hill is more than a flower farm – it’s an experience. The experience of walking through rows of flowers and cutting a bouquet right in the field to take home for your kitchen table. My hope is that every visitor leaves with more than a bouquet. I hope they leave with a smile and a reason to come back again.”

Rooted in the Community

King, who grew up in southern Campbell County and still lives close to where she grew up shares the history of farming in her family, “Haubner Road in California, Kentucky is named after the first Haubner that settled in the area sometime in the 1800’s. Years of large-scale farming took place on the fields including tobacco and hay. Over the years, multiple types of crops were harvested and sold to market. Our Haubner ancestors worked sun up to sun down and we have full respect for the amount of hard work they incorporated day in and day out.”

“Our family is now the 6th generation to farm the family property. In addition to the flowers, we grow vegetables we enjoy throughout the summer and into the winter by either canning or freezing.”

It’s a family affair, King continues, “We are a family of four –my husband is tasked with maintenance (I’m always breaking something) and my two daughters help when they can. Their favorite part is cutting the flowers and creating bouquets. My mom helps with weeds, the job no one wants. We have a dog, two cats that enjoy the flower field and a flock of chickens for eggs.”

“We offer fresh bouquets, U-Pick flower experiences, workshops, photography opportunities, and farm tours for organizations and groups. We also offer bouquet subscriptions, grower bucket orders and DIY options. I love creating opportunities for people to learn about flowers, support local agriculture, and enjoy the flower field. I recently had a local Girl Scout troop from Fort Thomas visit. I’m growing more than 50 varieties of specialty cut flowers. All the flowers were started by seed, right there on the farm. Although the flower field is approximately 1/8 of an acre, there are over 6,000 flowers transplanted by hand. During the growing season, I harvest flowers to dry which are used off-season for “make and take” everlasting workshops, crafts and home décor.”

Shop Local

“One of my favorite parts of running Homegrown on Haubner Hill is partnering with other local small businesses.” King supports shopping local, adding, “Throughout the season, we collaborate with young entrepreneurs, local makers, farmers, and educators through farm events. Whether it’s inviting vendors to the farm, partnering on educational experiences, or working together to create unique events, I love showcasing the incredible talent we have right here in our community. Recently, I had a “Welcome Summer” event, with 17 vendors, including farm animals from local farm, Sun E Farms.”

In addition to visiting the farm, you can find their flowers at select local events throughout the season, including Flea in the Fort, Covington Farmers Market, Bellevue Farmers Market and the Campbell County Backroads Farm Tour. We also offer pre-orders for bouquets and our Haubner Hill Bloom Club, which brings fresh, locally grown flowers to members throughout the season. They’ve also partnered with Brass Key Coffee in Alexandria as a pickup location for the Bloom Club.
