As the new school year gets into full swing, did you know that students can get no-cost, live homework help, skills building, writing assistance, test prep help, FAFSA application help and more from expert tutors through the library’s online resource Homework HelpNow?  Live help is available from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

2026 Mary S. Stern Lecture: Atul Gawande

Bestselling author, acclaimed surgeon and public health leader Atul Gawande, M.D., comes to Cincinnati Tuesday, October 26, at the Aronoff Center for the Arts for a powerful evening exploring how medicine, families and communities can better support quality of life in our most vulnerable moments. The event begins at 7 pm. Tickets priced from $5 to $15.

The late Mary S. Stern endowed an annual lecture series for the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library through The Library Foundation, opens a new window to support bringing internationally renowned thought leaders to our community. As part of Stern’s lasting legacy, tickets for the lecture series are priced to ensure today’s renowned thinkers are accessible to as many people as possible. I just got my hands on Wisdom Corner by David Heska Wanbli Weiden and chewed through it in one sitting. This long-awaited sequel to his debut novel Winter Counts sees former vigilante for hire Virgil Wounded Horse struggling to keep his promise to “walk the red road” and live a spiritual life free of violence. It’s not long before rival gangs, shady tribal politicians and greedy real estate developers force him to make hard choices. Another great gritty, two-fisted crime story with an eye-opening look at the challenges of contemporary life on a reservation. 

I saw a post online recently that said tigers are some of the few animals capable of revenge. This was meant to get people excited for the Bengals’ season but also led me to The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant. It’s a deep dive into what happened when a Russian poacher crossed the wrong ten-foot long, six-hundred-pound super-predator in the Siberian wastes.
