Indian Hill School District welcomed a new high school principal in the fall of 2024: Mr. Andrew (Andy) Gruber. At his two-year mark, he reflects on his past academic positions, educational philosophy and shares his unique vision for our nationally ranked high school.
Before joining Indian Hill, Mr. Gruber worked across K-12 schools in the Cincinnati area. From hands-on classroom math teaching to behind-the-scenes work in enrollment; his experiences gave him valuable insight into school operations at all levels. Prior to his time in the Indian Hill School District, he served as Director of Enrollment at St. Xavier High School, his alma mater. While at St. X, he enjoyed the atmosphere of student responsibility and freedom where they “led on their own time.” This educational philosophy of student autonomy is something he deeply values and hopes to further cultivate at Indian Hill High School.
Mr. Gruber’s leadership revolves around the important question of enhancing Indian Hill students’ autonomy, independence and self-direction. He asks, “how do we provide more quality educational time and flexibility for students?” Prioritizing student freedom and self-direction continues to influence his approach as a principal. While engaging this question this past spring, Mr. Gruber was preparing to launch the new IHHS schedule for the 2026-2027 school. This highly anticipated change will combine all lunch periods into one extended block of time. The consolidated lunch hour will allow all students to move around the building with classmates, visit teachers’ rooms for office hours, or work deeply on academic projects that need more focus. If successful, the new schedule will allow students and teachers more flexibility, freedom, and time to pursue academic and non-academic passions.
Upon arriving at Indian Hill, Mr. Gruber’s main goal was to act as a “sponge,” absorbing as much information as possible about the high school community. For him, enacting change started with listening, engaging and understanding. In his first months, he facilitated over eighty sit down conversations with students and faculty members. During those face-to-face meetings, he gained insight into potential areas of growth, achieved a comprehensive understanding of the community’s atmosphere, and deeply rooted relationships – a primary and ongoing goal of his. Mr. Gruber has shown what it truly means to lead through listening.
Mr. Gruber’s focus on listening connects directly with his broader emphasis on engagement and community. At the core of this, is the idea of “opportunity” at Indian Hill High School.
For the small size of the high school, Indian Hill High School offers an impressive variety of advanced academic courses, arts programming, and athletics, all which differentiate Indian Hill from other schools in the area. Most importantly, if there is something you want to do or get involved in as a student, you can propose it. Furthermore, Mr. Gruber gave a shout out to our newly established entrepreneurial center, which runs our Experienceships program. The Experienceship Program is unique in that it “has dedicated funds to help students find out what they do or don’t want to do and make an informed decision” explains Gruber. This facet of the high school is truly special and valuable, as it gives students unparalleled workforce experiences with local mentors and allows them to access careers they may want to pursue when they leave Drake Road.
As Mr. Gruber prepares to enter his second year at the high school, he continues to lead through student engagement, enhancing educational opportunities, and impactful academic change. His ongoing commitment to listening first and connecting with community members will continue to positively shape our high school. The community looks forward to Mr. Gruber’s changes including the launch of the open schedule, expansion of the Experienceship program, and more. As IHHS begins another year of opportunity and success, it is crucial to recognize Mr. Gruber’s intentional and impactful leadership.
