Remembering Journalist and Fort Thomas Resident Pat Crowley

The following is a statement from the family of Pat Crowley. We were also honored to have Crowley contribute to Living Magazines over the years. He will be missed.

Statement from the family of Pat Crowley

Pat Crowley — a long-time reporter and columnist with the Cincinnati Enquirer and a founding partner of Strategic Advisers, LLC, a Northern Kentucky public relations, marketing, and public affairs firm — passed away unexpectedly at his home in Fort Thomas on Saturday, December 28. 

He was 63 years old. He is survived by his wife, Pam, a daughter, Shayna, and a son, Conor, as well as twin grandsons and granddaughter.

Crowley started Strategic Advisers in 2009 after working for 27 years as a newspaper, magazine, television, and Internet journalist, including 16 years as business writer, political writer and columnist, and metro columnist for The Cincinnati Enquirer. He and other members of Crowley’s extended family also own and operate Crowley’s Highland House Café in Mount Adams, the oldest Irish pub in Cincinnati that has been the family’s business since 1937.

He was well known in the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati community for his intelligence, humor and wit, compassion, work ethic, and abundant love of his dear family as well as the many cats and dogs that he and Pam rescued and cared for over the years.  

He touched many lives during his brilliant lifetime and he made those lives better because of his kindness, thoughtfulness, and friendship. 

Most of Crowley’s time at the Enquirer was spent at the newspaper’s Northern Kentucky and Frankfort bureaus. In 2007, The Kentucky Press Association named him the state’s top columnist and his 2004 series on casino gambling earned state and national awards. The Washington Post selected him as one of the country’s top political reporters and political bloggers.

He parlayed his connections in the news media and relationships in Frankfort and Washington into a successful 15-year career in PR and public affairs at Strategic Advisers. His son and daughter also work at the company based in Newport, Ky. 

Crowley was a sought-after speaker and emcee, hosting numerous events, speaking on issues like crisis management and other PR topics, and serving on discussion panels for the many organizations, such as the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, the Covington Business Council, and Kentuckians for Better Transportation, to name just a few.

During his newspaper career, Crowley also worked for The Cincinnati Post, The Cincinnati Business Record, The Maysville Ledger-Independent, the Register Newspapers of Southeastern Indiana, and The Recorder Newspapers of Northern Kentucky. Crowley’s freelance journalism work appeared in Newsweek, Family Circle, American Bar Association Journal, and National Real Estate Investor, to name a few. 
Crowley hosted two long-running television shows on Insight Channel ICN6 (now Spectrum Cable) in Northern Kentucky: “On The Record,” a public affairs show, and Northern Kentucky Magazine, a morning news and feature program. He has regularly appeared as a commentator on KET’s Comment on Kentucky, WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, and WLW radio in Cincinnati.

As a Kentucky political and government writer, Crowley also covered nearly 20 regular and special sessions of the Kentucky General Assembly; the administrations of six governors; the 1996 and 2000 Republican and Democratic national conventions; and several Senate, Congressional, statehouse, county, and city campaigns. He also spent a year covering Cincinnati City Hall and several years reporting on state agencies, local governments, and public and private schools and economic development.
