Loren Long Inspires Young Readers During Special Visit

Madeira’s Long visits St. Lawrence Elementary School

Queen City Book Bank (QCBB) was thrilled to partner with Loren Long, New York Times bestselling author, award-winning illustrator, and proud QCBB Board Member, to bring the joy of stories and creativity to 2nd graders across Cincinnati.

Thanks to Loren’s generosity, every 2nd grader in QCBB’s Curated Book Distribution Program, nearly 1,000 students across 20 partner schools, received a personal copy of his beloved picture book, Otis the Tractor, to take home.

On December 4, one lucky school, St. Lawrence School in Price Hill, received an extra-special surprise: a visit from Loren Long himself. As one of 20 schools participating in QCBB’s curated book program, St. Lawrence welcomed Loren into their school library, where he shared his creative process, answered students’ questions, and encouraged them to embrace their boundless imaginations. He even guided them through their own drawings of Otis the Tractor.

Loren reminded students that they are not only readers, they are artists, creators, and storytellers with worlds of their own to share. His warm energy and thoughtful insights captivated the young audience and sparked excitement that filled the room.

Liz Asman, Program Coordinator for QCBB and liaison to St. Lawrence shared, “St. Lawrence has been such a wonderful partner. The students, teachers, and staff bring so much enthusiasm to our program, and we were absolutely thrilled to bring Loren Long to their school. Seeing their excitement and curiosity made the day truly special.”

To ensure students across all partner schools could share in the experience, Loren also filmed an engaging, interactive video, allowing 2nd graders at the remaining 19 schools to enjoy the same creative inspiration.

CEO of QCBB Michelle Otten Guenther shared, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Loren Long for his continued support of Queen City Book Bank and dedication to young readers in our community. His gift for nurturing creativity empowers students to see themselves as creators with voices worth sharing.”
